Netflix has confirmed that it will include a Netflix gaming service with video games as part of its subscription packages and that there will be no extra cost. Netflix has released that its preliminary efforts in gaming will be pivoted on mobile games. The best part is that the games will be included with customers’ Netflix subscriptions. The company announced as part of its second-quarter earnings report on Tuesday.
Netflix Gaming Service Early Stages
Netflix is in the early stages of expanding into the gaming business and building its efforts around Stranger Things games and interactivity. Netflix considers its expansion into gaming as a new content category, similar to original films, animation, and unscripted TV. They are finally making moves to understand the value of games to their customers. They expect a volley of escalating investment and broadening across all of their existing content.
So far there is no clear evidence on what category of games will be available and there is also no word on how the games will be delivered to Netflix users. The company has addressed earlier that they compete with (and lose to) Fortnite more than HBO in 2019 for attention. As part of its first-quarter earnings, COO, Greg Peters has discussed the company’s curiosity in games in April. Netflix does seem like it’s more engrossed in games now than ever before.
The pandemic was like a double-edged sword for Netflix, as it saw an astronomical surge in new sign-ups, but it also delayed the production of big titles. Netflix has been hiring some big names like Mike Verdu who was vice president of game development of gaming company Electronic Arts (EA) and expanding its deal with the Bridgerton creator Shonda Rhimes to include gaming.
