There are innumerable theories on why is Apple called Apple. I love theories about daily used gadgets. There’s a theory that states the Apple with the bite taken out of it represents the apple from the Garden of Eden as it made them enlightened. The computer certainly is a tool that can help one become enlightened nevertheless, one has to always watch out for fake news.
Reasons/Theories on why is apple called apple
- In Walter Isaacson’s biography – Jobs discloses that he’d come up with a name while being on a herbivore diets. Due to recently paying a visit to an apple farm he thought the name sounded fun, spirited and not unnerving. Steve Wozniak said he remembers driving Steve Jobs back from the airport on Highway 85 to an apple orchard. It was actually some genre of fellowship. Steve then put forth the name – Apple Computer.
- Was it for Alan Turing? – Yes indeed, there are theories about how the Apple logo was inspired by Alan Turing a noted mathematician who had died after taking a bite of an apple infused with cyanide. It may have been Jobs and Woz way of honoring Turing (the enigma code-breaker who is widely appraised to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence). The logo’s creator, Rob Janoff has said that the bite was intended to show the size of the apple (so that it wouldn’t be mistaken for a cherry or another fruit).
- Because it helped Newton discover Gravity – If you weren’t aware, the original Apple logo featured a picture of Isaac Newton sitting under the Apple tree. But it was replaced by the Apple with a bite taken out of it as the original one was considered old fashioned and was difficult to reproduce in a smaller size.
- For the Beatles? Was Steve Jobs a huge fan of Beatles that their Label Apple Corps inspired the company’s logo? No, it was rather in spite of the Beatles. After Jobs had suggested that they should call their company “Apple”, Woz told that he said What about Apple Records? In the dearth of a cut above name Apple stuck with Apple. Which led to multiple legal disputes with the Beatles record label. The legal activity peaked in 2006 as Apple Computer and Apple Records met at the High Court of Justice in a falling-out over the extent of iTunes Music Store.
Conclusion
iWoz(his biography), Steve Wozniak says that Apple was better than any other technical name they could conjure up. As it turns out essentially why is Apple called Apple is because they couldn’t come up with anything better. I would likely believe the Adam and Eve theory, but I do believe Rob Janoff’s explanation as he is the one who created the logo.
