Whether you are an Apple fan or not, you will probably have noticed a number missing from the iPhone lineup. In addition, you might have wondered why there is no iPhone 9.
Apple did not provide any statement as to why the iPhone 9 was skipped. However, a few common speculations explain why the iPhone 9 was missed. Therefore, I have given below a few of the most likely reasons.
It was the iPhone’s 10th anniversary.
The iPhone X was released in November 2017 to commemorate the iPhone’s 10th anniversary; X is the Roman numeral that signifies 10. So far, it is the only iPhone with a Roman numeral as a part of the name.
A valid case could be made that it would sound odd if Apple released the iPhone 9 to mark ten years’ worth of iPhones. However, the number mismatch could lead to even more confusion, so skipping the iPhone 9 made much more sense.
To signify a significant iPhone upgrade.
The iPhone underwent a significant upgrade from the iPhone 8 to the iPhone X. For example, the iPhone X introduced Face ID; on top of that, the screen filled almost the whole front side of the iPhone to make the user experience even more immersive.
Given that the iPhone X was also the most expensive iPhone released then, it could be argued that the name “iPhone 9” would fail to encapsulate its premium nature. Instead, the iPhone X gave an innovative ring to the device.
It is better marketing.
A couple of months before the iPhone X, Apple had already released the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. Therefore, it could be argued that the iPhone 8 Plus could more or less be called the iPhone 9 for the sake of continuity.
If Apple had done that, you would automatically see the devices belong to three categories of “newness” when you decide to upgrade the iPhone.
However, as the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus were categorized into the same series, consumers could only see two choices: good versus best and old versus new. On top of this, Apple likely gained more sales by making the pricey iPhone X extra special.
So, why did Apple skip the iPhone 9?
As it is speculated, skipping the iPhone 9 was not due to superstition. If it were, Apple would have forgotten iPhone 13 as well. Overall, having no iPhone 9 is more of a business move, which is crucial for a tech behemoth like Apple.
