Keyboard shortcuts can be used to take screenshots on your Mac, but different techniques provide different results. There are three common keyboard shortcuts, a fourth one is also there for your users who have a MacBook with a touch bar. Apple does provide a decent number of options to save, delete and open the screenshots.
How to take a screenshot on Mac?
- To take a screenshot, press and hold the Shift, Command, and 3 keys together
- You’ll see a thumbnail in the corner of the screen, click it to view/edit the screenshot.
How to capture a portion of the screen?
- Press Shift, Command, and 4 keys together and hold them
- Drag the crosshair to select the area of the screen that has to be captured. To move the selection, press the Space bar and hold it while dragging the cursor.
- To cancel the screenshot, press Esc.
- To capture, release the mouse button.
- You’ll see a thumbnail in the corner of the screen, click it to view/edit the screenshot.
How to capture a window or menu?
- Open the window or menu that you want to take a screenshot of.
- Press and hold Shift, Command, 4, and space bar keys together. The pointer transforms into a camera icon.
- Click the window or menu to capture it. To exclude the window’s shadow from the capture, press and hold the Option key while you click.
- You’ll see a thumbnail in the corner of the screen, click it to view/edit the screenshot.

Just tap Command-Shift-6 to take a screenshot of your Touch Bar.
For all of the above processes, you can right-click the Floating Thumbnail to:
- Save the screenshot to your desktop, or any desired location
- Open it in Mail, Preview, or Photos
- Show in Finder
- Delete
- Close
- By default, screenshots will be saved on your desktop
