Italy had to win euro 2020 the hard way through penalties
The Azzurri have won the euro 2020 for the third time in their history. Undoubtedly the best team in the tournament, the euro couldn’t have had a more worthy winner. A night where the likes of Harry Kane and Chiesa was expected to shine, it’s Italy’s keeper Donnarumma, who turned into their match-winner.
First Half
The game started off in an electric fashion. Luke Shaw scored an absolute screamer of a volley, which raised the roof in Wembley. Italy gradually but surely found their way, creating chance after chance. Chiesa was posing all sorts of problems for the English backline, but their defence held firm. England was 45 mins away from their first-ever euro and their first trophy since 1966.
Second Half
Italy started on a positive note, Chiesa had English players on skates but failed to test the goalkeeper. The Azzurri’s hard work paid off in the 67th minute when Bonnuci tapped home the equalizer from close range. Both Defenses held firm for 90 minutes, which forced the game into extra time.
Extra Time
Italy looked exhausted in ET, but the grit of Chiellini and Bonnuci was enough to keep England’s attack at bay.
Penalties
Penalties are pure luck, one could be the greatest penalty taker ever, but that doesn’t guarantee anything. This was evidenced by Jorginho’s Penalty miss, his conversion rate before today’s miss was over 90 %. Donnarumma was Italy’s hero in the shootout, he made 2 key saves to win it for his team. His performances through the tournament deservedly earned him the player of the tournament award.
